Most women become mothers in hospital rooms. Oh sure, there’s the occasional baby born in a cab, those at-home births that have become recently popular again, not to mention the rare on-the-toilet-in-a-public-bathroom birthings that take place. But none of this for me, no, I became a mother in a court room. No labor pains, no Lamaze, no pushing. Just a judge with a gavel that he didn’t use, some paperwork, snap a picture and ta-da! My petition for adoption had been reviewed and accepted and four beautiful children, smiling apprehensively, were grafted onto me from this day forward as long as we both shall live.
